| On Astral Projection: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
What is "Astral Projection"? by Jouni Smed Superficially, the idea of having a double may seem to explain the OBE. However, as soon as this idea is pursued, problems become obvious and the system has to get more complicated to deal with those problems. One of the most complex, and certainly the most influential, of such systems is the theory of astral projection, based on the teachings of theosophy. In 1875 Madame Blavatsky founded the Theosophical Society in New York, to study Eastern religions and science. From her teachings, brought back from her travels in India and elsewhere, a complex scheme evolved. According to the Theosophists, man is not just the product of his physical body, but is instead thought to be a complex creature consisting of many bodies, each finer and more subtle than the one 'below' it. These bodies should be thought of as an outer garment which % | |||||||||||||||||||||||
| Thought You Knew About Black Holes? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Black holes are possibly the most exotic entity encountered in physics today. The implications regarding spacetime within a black hole is enough to make the science of black holes seem more like science fiction. More astounding still are the implications of black hole physics on thermodynamics. Through a series of mathematical and scientific developments in the physics of black holes, we are led to ideas such as the temperature of a black hole, and then accordingly the entropy of a black hole, and finally to a generalization of entropy and the second law of thermodynamics as it relates to the universe (which is about as general as you can get). These concepts are made possible by a phenomenon in quantum field theory that allows for the creation of quantum particles in a vacuum, due to fluctuations in the gravitational field. They are allowed to exist for only a short time (dictated by an alternative form of the uncertainty principle) before recombining and annihilating one another. The quantum particles are made in pairs in which one is the anti-particle of the other, and the anti-particle has the negative of everything of its particle pair, including energy. This phenomenon was discovered by Stephen Hawking in 1974, and directly leads, as we shall soon see, to astonishing conclusions of the form described above; but first a little necessary background treatment of black holes is in order. Black holes are formed from neutron stars, the final stage of stellar evolution. Neutron stars are mostly composed of very compressed neutrons, as the name implies. These neutrons are undergoing rapid gravitational collapse. If the mass of the neutron star is less than ~2 solar masses, then it can probably stabilize and spend the rest of time cooling off. If the mass is more, then it will most likely undergo continued evolution and thus continue to collapse. The force or pressure that opposes the gravitational collapse is called neutron degeneracy pressure.
